The Trio for violin, horn and piano seems to end with a riveting third part, but then Auerbach surprises us with a concluding Adagio, a masterpiece [BE1] of weightlessness. Auerbach started working on the Seraphim Canticles in her temporary dwelling, after her New York apartment was destroyed by fire in the autumn of 2009.

This concert is part of the Lera Auerbach Festival

Programme

Lera Auerbach Trio for violin, French horn and piano (2014)
Lera Auerbach Seraphim Canticles (2011) sextet for 2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cello’s

Seraphim are biblical angels, terrifying, flaming and with six wings (sextet). Lera Auerbach: 'This is a very personal work. It's an intense prayer, perhaps an unrelenting look at despair.' Lera Auerbach concludes her Trio for violin, horn and piano with a surprising Adagio, a masterpiece of weightlessness. She began writing to the Seraphim Canticles after her New York apartment was destroyed by fire in the fall of 2009. 'This is a very personal work. It's an intense prayer, perhaps an unrelenting look at despair.'

Imaginative songs for saxophone quartet and women's choir, inspired by the whimsical, ambiguous and humorous poetry from the collection Galgenlieder (1905) by the German poet Christian Morgenstern. 'One must certainly exaggerate in the interpretation. The listener can be surprised, delighted or irritated, but it should never get boring', says Lera Auerbach. In addition, new work by the Uruguayan-Spanish composer, guitarist and sound designer Guzmán Calzada Llorente, composer-in-residence of Festival Dag in de Branding will be performed.
