Tonight, we show off Schubert’s sunny side in a programme featuring, among others, his superlative “Trout” quintet, the fourth part of which is based on his own song about the capricious fish.

Also on the schedule is the Grande Marche Funèbre, Schubert’s piercingly melancholic funeral march inspired by the death of Czar Alexander I of Russia. 

Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor is one of his so-called “late” string quartets, five brilliant pieces in which the composer seems to be speaking in tongues at one moment, only to prove himself far ahead of his time in the next. They are extremely difficult to perform, and require effort even on the part of the listener – a far cry from the entertaining character that had defined the genre until then. The severely ill Schubert heard the Quartet in C-sharp Minor on 14 November 1828, five days before his death, and was deeply impressed.
