On the programme are Schubert’s famous song Erlkönig, followed by the dazzling Gran Caprice for solo violin, written by composer and violin virtuoso Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst based on the famous song.

However, this concert’s true pièce de résistance is the great master’s own String Quintet in C major. Written two months before his death in 1828, this piece is suffused with melancholy that is so characteristic of Schubert’s style. Two other typical Schubertian qualities are also very much in evidence: his unrivalled talent for melody – he is after all known as the greatest song composer in history, with good reason – and his keen sense for rhythm and dance. People often itch to dance when hearing Schubert!
