Schnittke was inspired to write his Twelve Psalms of Repentance to mark the thousand-year Christianisation of Russia in 1988.

Alfred Schnittke - 12 Stichi Pokajanije

Schnittke discovered the lyrics in a collection of apocryphal and anonymous poetry by sixteenth-century monks, published in Moscow in 1986.
