Amare awarded ITS certificate for its excellent accessibility

Amare has become the first large cultural building in the Netherlands to receive the International Symbol of Access (Dutch: Internationaal Toegankelijkheidssymbool Keurmerk, ITS)! This certificate is bestowed by the Dutch organisation for people with impairments.

To be eligible for the ITS certificate, a building must fulfil a series of stringent criteria. For instance, the building must be easily accessible for people in a wheelchair as well as for people with a visual impairment. The certificate was awarded on 17 June 2022.

Alderman for urban development, Anne Mulder: ‘’We are very pleased that Amare has been awarded the ITS certificate. Right from the start of construction, it was decided that the new cultural complex should belong to the whole city and should therefore be suitable for everyone. This certificate confirms that we succeeded in that goal. I find it important that all citizens of The Hague can enjoy the splendid cultural offerings of Amare.”

BREEAM Excellent

In addition to the ITS certificate, Amare earlier received the BREEAM-NL Excellent certificate. The so-called Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment (BREEAM) certification method has been used since 2009 to assess buildings with respect to sustainability criteria. It includes examining the building’s energy consumption, the interior climate, and the construction materials used.
