The first NDT 2 program of the season The play between presents two new voices to Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) that are idiosyncratic storytellers in their own right who will both present two new world premieres. NDT is very excited to add their unique perspectives on dance to its roster of creators.

Programme

Marcos Morau - Wereldpremière
Nadav Zelner - Wereldpremière

Marcos Morau (Spain) is a rising star in the European theatre and dance world. His imaginative work ambitiously melds dance, fashion, film, theatre and photography and is often influenced by art, historical references that he reinterprets and molds into a new landscape of visual and inventive narratives. Morau studied choreography at the Institut del Teatre Barcelona, movement research in New York and holds a master's degree in Dramaturgy. In partnership with other artists, Morau established the group La Veronal in 2005, which works within the disciplines of dance, film, literature and photography. Morau’s choreographic language tends to be saturated in a playful absurdism and theatricality that promote a new narrative language. For this programme, NDT is delighted to have Morau create a new work with the dancers of NDT 2.

Choreographer Nadav Zelner (Israel) is an independent dancer and choreographer, and a bold voice taking hold of the contemporary dance world. Zelner’s work is committed to pushing the expression of the body with a fresh and provocative perspective that incorporates a strong sense of design and theatricality. He was a member of the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and danced in various international projects. Zelner has created work for the Gauthier Dance company and the Batsheva Dance Company, among many others. His vocabulary is influenced by popular culture that leads to highly aesthetisized works that are often accompanied by unexpected musical choices. The play between marks Zelner’s debut with NDT.

Marcos Morau

“The idea of the choreographic work is a visual and sound landscape that refers to us to a ritual, a celebration of men and women in front of nature. Facing the human being of the 21st century to look back in history and get lost in a pagan forest, full of enigmas and incredible situations that will shake the foundations of a civilization and a society built without affection, lost and confused.”

Between Barcelona and New York, Marcos Morau studied photography, movement and theatre. He builds worlds and imaginary landscapes where movement and image meet and shallow one another. For over ten years, Marcos runs La Veronal, as director, choreographer, and set, light and wardrobe designer. He’s travelled the world presenting his pieces at festivals, theatres and international contexts.

Apart from his work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau is an invited artist for various companies and theatres to develop new creations, always half way between scenic arts and dance, with special attention to dramaturgy.

As the youngest National Dance Award winner in Spain, his language is part of a heritage, from abstract movement and physical theatre, blended together in a surrealist and dark amalgam. A powerful body language based in the annihilation of any organic logic, dissecting movement and making it into a unique identity.

His work is present and supported by major theaters and international festivals, Avignon Festival, Sadler’s Wells, Rome Europe, Tanz im August among many others. Marcos Morau is also a guest creator in many top international companies: NDT, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Göteborgs Operans Danskompani among many others.

His last pieces for La Veronal, Opening Night (2021), Sonoma (2020) or Pasionaria (2018), reflect human beings of today, before their fears, questioning the world and the world and their destiny.

In season 2021-2022, Marcos will make his debut creation for the company with the NDT 2 dancers.

Nadav Zelner

“This is my first collaboration with NDT 2. I’m excited to meet new people, to create new fantasy and to be part of this wonderful legendary company. As a choreographer I’m always searching for the ultimate dancers which can bring to life multiple worlds at the same moment, as I mostly require. Looking forward to start this journey and welcoming you all to come and join us.”

Nadav Zelner was born in 1992 in Ramla, Israel. As a child Nadav loved dancing and listening to music and during his high school years he discovered his choreography skills. Over the years Nadav formed a unique dance language and recently he started to developers his own new dance technique of which he wants to make accessible to the world.

Nadav was invited to create work pieces for dance companies around the world. For his recent work he was invited by Marco Goecke to create a full evening for his company to open the season at the staatsoper theater in Hannover Germany.

Other companies he created for are the Batsheva Dance Company, Gauthier Dance Company, St. Gallen Theater, Stanislavsky Ballet, Augsburg Ballet, Introdans, Stadttheater Bremerhaven, Chinese International Chongqing Ballet Company. Nadav was invited by the prima ballerina Ekaterina Shipulina from the Bolshoi Ballet to create for her a solo called Ikra.

Nadav has a deep passion for cinema and he loves creating short dance films.

In 2019 one of Nadavs films inspired director of the Eurovision in Israel to create the entire concept of the postcards around dance and he invited Nadav to choreograph a major part of the postcards.
