South Korean-born and Amsterdam-based musician Sun-Mi Hong is one of the most innovative drummers and composers of her generation. She continually pushes the boundaries of jazz and effortlessly integrates influences from diverse musical traditions. Her new album Fourth Page: Meaning of a Nest once again demonstrates her creative spirit and drive for innovation.

The Sun-Mi Hong Quintet was founded in 2016. With this international quintet, she makes music that is rooted in both South Korean and European traditions. The ensemble consists of Nicolò Ricci on tenor saxophone, Alistair Payne on trumpet, Chaerin Im on piano and Alessandro Fongaro on bass.

On the album, Hong explores themes such as melancholy, innocence and self-expression, resulting in compelling compositions such as the title track Meaning of a Nest and Toddler’s Eye. They show an enthralling balance of vibrant energy and contemplative silence. Live, Sun-Mi Hong takes you on an emotional journey on which her quintet screams, embraces, cries and continuously surprises.
