The classically trained Medeski grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and studied at the New England Conservatory. Equally comfortable behind a Steinway grand, a Hammond organ or vintage keyboards, he is a sought-after improviser and bandleader. He has worked with a wide range of artists including John Zorn, The Word (Robert Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars), Phil Lesh, Don Was, John Scofield, Coheed & Cambria, Susana Baca, Sean Lennon, Marc Ribot, Irma Thomas, Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and many more.

His first solo piano album, A Different Time, was released on Sony's Okeh Records in 2013. He is currently working on a new album with his band MadSkillet (Terrence Higgins, Kirk Joseph, Will Bernard), a project called HUDSON in collaboration with Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield and Larry Grenadier and a documentary about Medeski Martin & Wood.
