As trend setter for the past 55 years, Salif Keita has marked his career time after time with world hits of Afro Pop. Not only due to his remarkable voice, often referred to as ‘The Golden Voice of Africa’, but also to his openness for experiments and collaborations. From his first recordings, Keita’s stardom was evident. And now, 5 Grammy nominations and 20 albums later, with world hits like Yamore and Madan, Salif Keita’s legacy to African music history is undeniable.

Salif Keita is a direct descendant of Soundiata Keita, prince and founder of his native country Mali. This made Salif Keita seem destined for a career in science, education or government. However, his albinism caused his life to take a completely different course: he was rejected by his family because this condition brings bad luck according to Mandinka culture. His inner drive and talents kept him going and led him to music. He achieved success with his powerful voice, first in Africa, after which he also managed to conquer Europe and then the world. Keita's music is deeply rooted in the rich Malian musical tradition, but at the same time modern, international and universal. In his songs, his native soil forms the foundation for Western pop, rock, jazz and blues, but also for rousing Latin American and Portuguese influences.
