Just Peace Festival connects in times of tension

June 2025, Article

As a highlight event of the Just Peace Festival 2025, NGO Dei, Human Rights in the Picture and The Hague Humanity Hub present the bold and hopeful exhibition Humanity in Times of Tension. From 12 till 26 June the works on the Kunstenplein in Amare invite you to reflect on today's world. In addition, there is much more to do and see in Amare in the context of the Just Peace Festival, also for children. We take you along in this overview.

This June, The Hague transforms into a vibrant stage for peace, justice, and connection. From dialogues and debates to exhibitions, movie nights, music, and dance, the Just Peace Festival brings together citizens, artists, experts, and policymakers to explore the power of peace and justice in action. Part of the city-wide Road to Summit programme, this two-week festival invites you to engage, learn, share, and be inspired by the diverse voices shaping a more just world — right here in The Hague.

The festival officially opens with the launch of the multidisciplinary art exhibition Humanity in Times of Tension, featuring contemporary artists from diverse geopolitical contexts. Together they explore the ways in which creativity acts both as a witness to conflict and a catalyst for connection.

In addition to the exhibition, there is plenty to do in Amare during the Just Peace Festival. For example, start a conversation about peace with Hague Talks, take part in free workshops and enjoy various activities for children. The Ypenburg Library is also showing the film The Walk about Little Amal, a metres-tall giant doll that represents a refugee girl and opened Amare in 2021.

Exhibition Humanity in Times of Tension

In today’s world, where conflict, inequality, and climate challenges affect so many lives, it can feel hard to stay hopeful. Humanity in Times of Tension is an exhibition that makes room for that hope, through powerful art, storytelling, and interactive experiences. Together they spark an important conversation about the choices we make when facing inequality and hardship.

The exhibition invites visitors, especially younger generations, to reflect, connect and consider how we can build a more just and compassionate world, even in challenging and increasingly polarizing times. It shows how ordinary people speak out, protect each other, imagine better futures, and take action. It offers a space for  reflection, connection, and new ideas and reminds us that even though the world can feel divided, our shared humanity can bring us together.

The exhibition includes photography, paintings, installations, multimedia experiences and interactive spaces and is free to visit from 12 till 26 June at the Kunstenplein in Amare.
