Ease into your Sunday morning, with a mind invigorated by sparkling music. Today’s theme is the alluring elegance of Haydn, who shines an irresistible spotlight on the cello.

Programme

Haydn Celloconcert in D
R. Strauss Suite ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ (1945)
Ravel La valse

Join Residentie Orkest to discover the magic of Sunday morning: a time to escape from it all, relax and let the symphonies caress your mind. This morning, we have a piece by Joseph Haydn that was once completely forgotten and indeed believed lost: his Cello Concerto in D, which was discovered in a library in Prague in 1961 and has since become one of the most famous and beloved cello concertos worldwide. It is a typical Rococo piece: light, elegant and clear, with a lyrical cello supported by the orchestra. Rapid passages, double stops, high notes and cadenzas – Haydn’s brilliance speaks for itself.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

This musical piece is one of the most popular works for cello, and deservedly so: it fills the hall with the full spectrum of the instrument’s virtuosity and expressiveness. Artist-in-residence Jean-Guihen Queyras is ready to do justice to this phenomenal work, once more joining forces with Anja Bihlmaier in her final concert as chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest. Also on the programme are grand masters Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel’s interpretations of the Waltz. The Der Rosenkavalier Suite embraces the lush romanticism of early Viennese modernism, but La Valse – one of the most spectacular works for orchestra ever composed – adopts a more dissociative approach, symbolic of the unrest and uncertainty of the interwar period.

Musical workshop for children
Tip! A special musical workshop for children aged 4 to 12 will be held during the concert, for a fee of € 4.00 per child. Please note that reservations in advance are required! The workshop is given in Dutch. You can order the workshop in the ordering process for the concert tickets.
