In the performance Devī, Poernima explores the duality of human existence, inspired by two fundamental energy flows: the feminine (Devī) – connected to intuition, gentleness, and surrender – and the masculine (Deva) – characterized by reason, measurability, and control. These concepts are rooted in Vedic literature, including the Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Upaniṣads, which describe how both principles are inseparable and that true unity lies beyond opposites.
Yet Poernima sees a clear imbalance in our current society: the masculine aspect prevails, while the feminine increasingly fades into the background. In Devī: Dance & Dialogue, she questions this development and invites you to discuss it. What do these principles mean to you? How do you experience this dynamic in your life and environment? We will also share movement material, and Poernima is curious to hear your thoughts, experiences, and perspectives!
Free admission, you can register via this link, but you can also just join in.
Poernima Dance Company (PDC) is a dance company led by artistic director Poernima Gobardhan, which interprets dance forms from the Hindustani diaspora, such as Indian classical dance and Surinamese dance, and brings them into the contemporary era. We are committed to an artistic practice in which dance is not only an art form, but also a means of sharing and understanding profound human experiences. Our goal is to touch the essence of being human and connect with the audience in a new way. The themes of our performances are therefore often driven by topics that are personal, human, and social.

As a creative jack-of-all-trades, Poernima Gobardhan leaves no stone unturned in her quest to showcase Indian dance in general and her vision of it in particular. In addition to her dance school Pretima Ke Dewashrie in The Hague, she has performed several times for millions of viewers on television programs and creates powerful dance performances.
Her greatest strength? She has developed Bharat Natyam, a classical dance form, into something contemporary. How does she do that? By transforming the classical form into the expressiveness of her own body. She draws on the movements and expressions of Indian forms that tell the story of the Vedic tradition (philosophical writings). But as a modern Dutch woman with Hindustani roots, she contrasts this with her individual motivations and life questions.
