El Niño & Europe: how a climate shock crosses borders

Scientists are warning of the possibility of an exceptionally strong El Niño, which could cause extreme weather worldwide this year. African countries, in particular, face significant risks. Climate change there compounds existing challenges of poverty, food insecurity, and conflict. Due to major cuts in development cooperation and humanitarian aid, vulnerable populations are being hit especially hard by new climate shocks.

What does a new period of extreme weather mean for people who are already under immense pressure? How can a government respond to this in times of scarcity and crisis? And what could the consequences be for Europe—for example, for food security and international security?

Using current examples from Malawi, Dr. Tanja Hendriks (Leiden University & Leiden Center for African Studies) demonstrates how international political choices have repercussions at the local level. She discusses the complex relationship between disaster response, climate adaptation, the role of the state, and global stability.
