Mauritanian singer and ardine player Noura Mint Seymali comes from a centuries-old griot tradition, in which music, poetry and stories support and pass on each other. From this rich background, she has developed a sound that is recognisable to her country and at the same time sounds surprisingly fresh and contemporary.

That world resonates clearly in her new album, Yenbett. Noura's voice moves between subdued melody and fiery outbursts, accompanied by the ardine, the traditional women's harp of Mauritania, and the electric guitar of her partner Jeich Ould Chighaly. The result is music that glows and pulsates: rhythmic, hypnotic and compelling, with echoes of tradition and adventure.

A special encounter between heritage and experimentation, in which the desert is given a voice and ancient music finds a new future.
