Spuiplein
Opening 6 September 2025
The Hague has been enriched with yet another vibrant cultural spot: the renewed Spuiplein. At the heart of the city, surrounded by cultural icons such as Amare, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), Residentie Orkest (RO), Koninklijk Conservatorium, Theater aan het Spui, Nieuwekerk and the Filmhuis, a green and lively square has been created. A city square, living room and garden rolled into one – and a new performance stage for The Hague. The festive opening of the square will take place on Saturday 6 September, as part of the Spotlight Festival.
Official opening
Alderman Saskia Bruines (Culture) will open the renewed square on 6 September at 12:30, together with two board members of Stichting Spuiplein, Leontien Wiering (director of Amare) and Cees Debets (director of Het Nationale Theater). The festive opening act will be performed by the colourful music ensemble Neo-Fanfare 9x13, after which the square will be symbolically handed to the city. That’s the cue for the Spotlight Festival programme to kick off. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun!
What’s so special about Spuiplein?
The square has been redesigned with lots of greenery and trees to provide for shade and cooler temperatures, a water reservoir to catch rainwater, places to sit, and open areas for events and to meet each other. Spuiplein furthermore offers recreational space for skaters and can serve as a cultural outdoor venue for theatre, music, dance and film.
A square for culture and for people to meet
The new Spuiplein is a meeting spot and a place where art and culture converge. It can serve as an outdoor stage for cultural organisations and a venue for large and small events, from street theatre and concerts to open air cinema.
This way, The Hague has been enriched with a versatile outdoor cultural space, offering opportunities for all sorts of programmes by various organisations and for local initiatives. Stichting Spuiplein will coordinate diverse cultural activities in the coming period. The performance PLEIN by Acteursgroep Wunderbaum promises to be a first highlight!
