New photo exhibition gives glimpse of Rivierenbuurt

The photo exhibition 'Wij Rivierenbuurt' shows the diversity and strength of the people who make up the Rivierenbuurt in The Hague. On display until February 4 in Amare on the Kunstenplein.

The Rivierenbuurt is Amare’s neighbour, on the other side of the Schedeldoekshaven. It used to be an area with harbours, decrepit housing and prostitutes. An old working-class neighbourhood with character, built on peat soil between Spui and railway.

Things changed: car viaducts cut through the neighbourhood, harbours and old houses disappeared, prostitutes became sex workers and artists came to live here. New houses were built and new residents moved in. But the character remained. Steven Scholten, Joris Wijsmuller and Oliver van der Spek live in the neighbourhood and regularly set out with their cameras. They photograph people who live here, work here or often come to visit. Their photos show the diversity and the strength of the people who together make up the Rivierenbuurt.

You can still admire the photo exhibition until February 4 on the Kunstenplein, on the ground floor at the entrance on Spuiplein.
