Never danced (balfolk) before? Don’t worry, a dance workshop is given beforehand, so you can hit the dance floor as soon as the band takes the stage. You don’t need to bring a (dance) partner: there are plenty of people to dance with.

A balfolk band is not just about dance, but also about music.

Paracetamol

This four-piece group plays balfolk music with a bittersweet edge. Captivating mazurkas, rolling gavottes, flowing bourrées, but also a rare grab bag and the first new bravade since 1657. Nico on violin, flutes, and bagpipes, together with Jan Willem Veenhuis on guitars and percussion, play with Gyöngyi Kovács (double bass and vocals) and Rob Zantkuijl (bagpipes, saxophone, flutes), creating echoes of Irish jigs, metal classics, Hungarian folk, and jazz runs. These sounds from previous musical lives resonate in their dance music. They travel from dark cafés, across dance floors, to festivals like Castlefest, CaDansa, and Le Son Continu. And now also in The Hague at Amare!

And, extra special: after their performance, musicians can make music together during the jam session, so definitely bring your (musician) friends and instruments! During this jam session, dancing is of course still possible.

Performers

Balfolk Zuid-Holland is a foundation that organizes balfolk events in South Holland, ranging from dance classes, workshops for dancers and musicians, jam sessions, and dance evenings with live music.

What is balfolk?

A balfolk dance evening, also called a bal, is somewhat comparable to a tango or salsa night, but with music and dance from Western Europe. A balfolk bal always comes with live music, because the interaction between musicians and dancers is important. Musicians play with the dancers, and the dancers play with the music. Musicians are often dancers themselves, and many dancers also make music. This makes balfolk very danceable music.

At balfolk, both partner and group dances are done. The main thing is to dance together in a friendly way. Having fun is more important than getting the steps perfectly. There is no fixed
