During World War I and World War II, church bells were melted down on a massive scale to make deadly weapons. Now that war is raging on European soil and we are being drawn further and further into it, HIIIT is turning this process on its head with Battles & Silences. In this project, scrap metal from the battlefield serves as the basis for a new series of instruments and music.

Programme

Anthony Fiumara & Mathijs Leeuwis (2025) – Battles & Silences

In the spring of 2024, eight kilograms of Ukrainian bullet casings were melted down into ingots in Kyiv, shipped to the Netherlands, and cast into a new bell at the Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry. Weighing a total of 45 kg, the bell heralds the beginning of a transformation; destruction is reborn as beauty.

On May 4 and 5, Battles & Silences can be visited as a haunting installation, and visitors can ring the bell themselves until May 16.
