Het North Sea String Quartet is hét Nederlandse jazzstrijkkwartet van dit moment. De improviserende muzikanten werpen een nieuw licht op het aloude strijkkwartet met hun uitgesproken improvisaties, vernieuwende speelstijlen en eigenzinnige composities, die geïnspireerd zijn door jazz, global, hedendaagse klassieke muziek en EDM.

Daarmee bouwen ze voort op een jonge traditie die begon met het Amerikaanse Turtle Island Quartet in 1985.

Het kwartet is al jaren internationaal actief, met name in samenwerkingen met artiesten als Ambrose Akinmusire (VS), Trio da Kali (ML), Lilian Vieira (BR), Javier Infante (ES) en Samora Pinderhughes (VS). Het viertal speelde op grote festivals zoals North Sea Jazz, Salzburg Jazz & the City, Canarias Jazz & Más en Sparks & Visions festival.

De drang om het strijkkwartetformat te vernieuwen resulteerde in een onderzoek naar ongewone klanken. Op hun nieuwste album laat het North Sea String Quartet horen wat ze hebben gevonden; verwacht een frisse benadering van het strijkersspel, die put uit elementen van elektronische muziek, maar zo akoestisch mogelijk blijft.
