A balfolk dance evening, also known as a ball, is somewhat comparable to a tango or salsa evening, but with music and dance from Western Europe. A balfolk ball is always accompanied by live music, precisely because the interaction between musicians and dancers is important. Musicians play with the dancers, and the dancers play with the music. Musicians are often dancers as well, and many dancers play music too. That makes balfolk music extremely danceable.

Programme

Tonight’s featured musician is Hartwin Dhoore, a Belgian accordionist and composer. His music possesses a certain gentleness that truly shines in a live setting. In a world where authenticity deeply resonates with listeners, Hartwin’s music speaks to the heart, providing a soundtrack for the listener's inner journeys and reflections. Over the years, he has developed a unique style on the diatonic accordion, blending melancholy and simplicity to create a cinematic, atmospheric soundscape. It is not only a delight to listen to but also perfect for *balfolk* dancing—now coming to The Hague!

And here’s an extra special treat: after his performance, musicians can join in for a jam session, so be sure to bring along your musical friends and instruments! Naturally, dancing is still welcome during the jam session.

19:00 – 20:00: Dance workshop
20:00 – 21:30: Live music by Hartwin Dhoore
21:30 – 23:00: Jam session for musicians and dancers alike

At balfolk, both partner and group dances are performed. The most important thing is to enjoy dancing together. Having fun is more important than getting the steps right. A fixed partner is not necessary; at a ball, you can ask anyone to dance and be asked by anyone to dance. And sometimes, you actually dance all together!

At the Kunstenplein in Amare, fun social dances are regularly organized in various dance styles, such as Latin, West Coast Swing, and Kizomba. Everyone is welcome to join in—whether you are curious about a new style or have known the dance floor for years. Every social dance begins with a workshop that aligns with the style of the evening.

Balfolk Zuid-Holland is a foundation that organizes balfolk in South Holland, ranging from dance classes and workshops for dancers and musicians to jam sessions and dance nights with live music. Never danced (balfolk) before? Don't worry; a dance workshop is held beforehand so you can hit the dance floor immediately when the band takes the stage. Bringing a (dance) partner is not necessary: there are plenty of people to dance with.

No further preparation is needed; just ensure you wear comfortable clothing and nice, flexible shoes—the music and fun will be taken care of.
