In 2026, John Coltrane would have turned 100 and to celebrate this, FES accepted Bozar’s invitation to pay tribute to this iconic musician who has had a major influence, be it direct or indirect, on many generations of musicians, both within and outside of jazz. Coltrane’s spirit entered the eccentric and idiosyncratic FES universe through all kinds of unfathomable musical paths and side roads, resulting in their own approach to his musical legacy in a completely unique, shrewd and fearless way.

Programme

Syeeda’s Song Flute, Giant Steps, Big Nick, Harmonique Exotique, Retiro Mitre, Lucie Und Ihre Goldy, Groove Along - The Slowtrane, Little Melonaise, OHM, Vigil, At The Spacebar, Cosmic Relief, Mr J.C., Ansae 467

Coltrane was a seeker and an innovator, who repeatedly redefined jazz in form and sound. This searching, probing and exploring of new horizons, is also what drives and fascinates FES.

The Coltrane Mutations will contain FES’ own arrangements and interpretations of a number of Coltrane classics, as well as completely new compositions, infected and pollinated by the “Trane virus”. This concert is a celebration of Coltrane's music: intense, spiritual and boundless. But it is also a tribute to his free spirit – a spirit in permanent resonance.

“I never even thought about whether or not they understand what I'm doing . . . the emotional reaction is all that matters as long as there's some feeling of communication, it isn't necessary that it be understood.”
“Jazz is a word they use to sell our music, but to me that word does not exist.”
— John Coltrane
