In this programme about transience and transition, Bach's monumental motets merge seamlessly with experimental works by Caroline Shaw and Kaija Saariaho.

Programme

Johann Sebastian Bach Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225
Johann Sebastian Bach Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, BWV 226
Johann Sebastian Bach Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 227
Johann Sebastian Bach Komm, Jesu, komm, BWV 229
Kaija Saariaho Nuits, adieux
Caroline Shaw Entr'acte

Bach's motets have always been greatly loved. Much of Bach's music went unperformed for long periods after his death. The motets are an exception and provided meaning at moments of transition in life, such as funerals. Grete Pedersen complements the motets with Nuits, adieux (Saariaho, 1991), in which farewell and the transition between night and day take on a singing, breathing and whispering sound. In Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte (2011), transition becomes an end in itself. Here, extraordinary musical transitions tumble playfully over one another.
