David Bowie has inspired saxophonist Yuri Honing since his youth. Honing began playing the saxophone after hearing David Sanborn’s solo on Bowie’s Young Americans. The Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet (YHAQ) has already recorded an album in Berlin (True, 2012) and covered three Bowie songs, including Bring Me the Disco King in a “new post-jazz” style.

The YHAQ aims to explore Bowie artistically through the “reworks” method. In this process, elements of Bowie’s music, as well as his art and drive for innovation, serve as the primary inspiration for adapting Bowie’s music for the quartet. Bowie’s individuality and his approach to creating for himself, without regard for others’ expectations, inspire them. As a quartet, they have embraced this mantra as their artistic motto for years.

In addition, the public has responded enthusiastically to their Bowie interpretations; the song After All has been streamed eight million times as of December 30, 2024. The YHAQ aims to use their love for Bowie—his drive for innovation, his expressiveness, his theatricality, and his ability to gather talent around him—as the starting point for a new album. This album will blend jazz and Bowie’s soul/pop with the quartet’s unique sound.
