A deeply spiritual plea for forgiveness set to some of the most beautiful choral music: Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen. Even for non-believers, the work is a hallucinatory meditation lasting nearly ninety minutes.

Programme

Arvo Pärt Kanon Pokajanen

Arvo Pärt completed his Kanon Pokajanen in 1997 for the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral. Pärt based the work on the complete Canon of Repentance from the Eastern Orthodox liturgy. He had already used parts of this hymn in earlier compositions, but setting the full text was, in the composer's words, 'an extremely enriching experience'. It does not get more spiritual than the Kanon.
