During 20 dancers for the XX century and even more, Amare’s architecture becomes part of the performance. Dance appears throughout the building, in unexpected places beyond the stage. There is no fixed seating and no set programme: you follow your own path, choosing where to pause, move on or return. For this Dutch premiere, Amare opens itself up to an immersive experience unlike anything presented here before.

Following presentations at leading venues and renowned art institutions across the world, including MoMA New York, Tate Modern London and Opéra national de Paris, this exceptional international dance experience now comes to The Hague. Twenty dancers and performers bring solos, gestures and memories back into the present. They recall fragments of dance history, claim them, perform them anew, explain them and pass them on.

From pioneers of modern dance to Charlie Chaplin, from postmodern icons to urban dance forms such as Krump: each dancer leads you into a different chapter of dance history. Close-up, open and constantly shifting.

A living archive of dance
Choreographer Boris Charmatz sees the body as the ultimate place for a dance museum. In 20 dancers for the XX century and even more, each dancer carries their own archive. They recall, appropriate, reenact, explain and transmit solo works originally conceived or performed by major dancers, choreographers and performance artists from the last century. The project is more than a tribute to dance history. Charmatz approaches it as a form of archaeology: gestures from the past are excavated and reactivated in the body of a dancer today. The result is a wild approach to history, where repertoire, memory, knowledge and improvisation are constantly in motion.

No stage, no fixed route
There is no defined stage and no order you have to follow. The dancers appear throughout the spaces, each with their own history and their own collection of movements. You can wander, stay, move on, return, listen, ask questions or experience up close how a dance fragment is passed on. From pioneers of modern dance to Charlie Chaplin, from postmodern icons to urban dance forms such as Krump: each dancer opens a different window onto dance history. Together, the dancers create a collective exploration of how movement is preserved, transformed and shared again.

Boris Charmatz and the museum without walls
Boris Charmatz is a dancer, choreographer and creator of experimental projects such as Bocal, Musée de la danse and Terrain. His work seeks dance beyond the traditional frame of the theatre and moves between creation, repertoire, theory and transmission. 20 dancers for the XX century premiered in Rennes in 2012 and has since been presented at venues including MoMA New York, Tate Modern London, Opéra national de Paris, Centre Pompidou Metz, Bozar Brussels and Museo Reina Sofía Madrid.

With 20 dancers for the XX century and even more, Charmatz invites you to step inside dance history rather than observe it from afar. An intimate, open and singular experience in which the body itself becomes the archive. Make sure not to miss this exceptional evening of international dance at Amare.
