BEHIND THE WALL

A true Conny Janssen, with live music by Roufaida 

This new production builds on the universe of Conny Janssen’s earlier production HOME (2017/2021), which centered on the question of where and with whom we feel at home. HOME took place in a large, white, anonymous space and ended with an enigmatic image: after all the dancers have left the space, one dancer remains behind. She wanders lost through the space and eventually disappears through a high opening in the set. The audience is left behind, looking at the empty white space.

In BEHIND THE WALL, we see the dancers finding their way in a world where memories, loss, and hope are constantly intertwined. What happens to them? What do you take with you from the past when you have to start over? Where are you allowed to feel at home? And how do you stay connected to where you come from?

Conny Janssen Danst' diverse and adventurous dance ensemble evokes this quest with an intensity that moves and confronts. With her typical choreographic signature - a powerful mixture of raw energy and tranquil poetry - Conny Janssen creates a universe in which personal narratives and universal issues intertwine.

The live music by Dutch-Moroccan artist Roufaida is the beating heart of the performance. Her layered sound, uniting North-African influences, alternative pop and poetic lyrics, deepens the subject matter and enhances the emotional strength of the dance.
