NDT 2’s first programme of the season is a daring reflection on our past and present. In Blast a universe, we revisit two iconic works from NDT’s repertoire by Jiří Kylián and Marco Goecke, and perform an exciting world premiere by the bold choreographic voice of Noé Soulier.

Programme

Jiří Kylián Sleepless (2004)
Noé Soulier Wereldpremière
Marco Goecke The Big Crying (2021)

Jiří Kylián’s evocative Sleepless (2004) emerged from his reflection on the sleepless hours of creating dance, writing: “It could be an interesting exercise, to trace and to document all the sleepless nights and hours...” Kylián was also inspired by the paintings of Argentinian artist Lucio Fontana, whose works broke through traditional dimensions and opened doors to the unknown in art.

In Sleepless, Kylián explores conscious and subconscious states with intricate duets and refined musicality, revealing the poetry of the body that Kylián is renowned for.

After his NDT debut About Now (2023), we are delighted to welcome back choreographer Noé Soulier for a world premiere. Soulier approaches choreography as a way of paying close attention to movement: how it works, how we perceive it, and how it can be altered. As he describes: “I am trying to establish a continuum from the singular gesture to the global structure”, bringing the intelligence of the body to the foreground rather than following a narrative. Set to an experimental techno score with field recordings by composer Sa Pa, this creation promises an immersive experience that is felt as much as it is seen.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

Associate choreographer Marco Goecke created one of his most personal and vulnerable works, The Big Crying (2021), shortly after the death of his father. As Goecke says, “It is a piece about parting and about everything we have to burn.” Set to a score by Tori Amos, the dancers’ bodies move like broken engines in Goecke’s complex and emotionally charged language. The Big Crying celebrates the urge to be alive, even in times of loss—a powerful work, which we're honoured to perform again.
