With his powerful, expressive voice, the versatile American countertenor John Holiday effortlessly moves between opera, jazz and gospel, reaching audiences worldwide. After the great success at the Prinsengracht Concert, Amsterdam Sinfonietta welcomes this exceptional guest once again for a varied Christmas programme of classical arias, jazz songs and carols.

Programme

Johann Sebastian Bach Brandenburg Concerto no. 6 in b flat minor

George Friedrich Händel Aria "Ombra mai fu", from: Serse
Carlos Simon The After Party (Dutch première)

Duke Ellington It don't mean a thing

The After Party, a new song cycle by Carlos Simon, was co-commissioned by Amsterdam Sinfonietta and written especially for John Holiday. Inspired by the African American movement of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, the work brims with energy and is imbued with the spiritual sound world of the Black community. The concert closes atmospherically with a selection of Christmas carols.
