Kites are the ultimate symbol of freedom. 26 years ago, artist Rienke Enghardt started using kites in her worldwide Hope Box (HBX) art actions. HBX kites went up all over the world, from Gaza City to Havana, from Hanoi to Johannesburg, and from Gori to The Hague to strengthen and spread the message of freedom and solidarity. To celebrate Liberation Day 2026, three of the HBX Kites are floating in Amare.
Freedom is YOU / WORLD PEACE (2008-2025)
Last year Rienke, and Ukrainian artist Alina Bielun travelled to Gori, Georgia for a HBX art-action bringing the HBX World Peace Kite along. This Kite was made by artist ZEDZ on 21 September 2008 during a HBX art-action in the Adjara Art Museum in Georgia, shortly after the war there. Last year, in Gori, Georgian artists Mariam & Nata painted a whooping Freedom is YOU on the other side of this long kite.
Hope & Tales (2024)
Rienke wrote the poem If I must die from Refaat Alareer on a white HBX Kite in solidarity of the people of Gaza. Between 2003 and 2005 Hope Box was active there. On the International Day of Peace 2024 they flew this kite alongside kites for Ukraine and Iran for all the people all over the world who are victims of violence and war.
Fenix Kite (2007)
This Kite is a response to the masterpiece Guernica by Picasso by Kiborz & Biskoteka and Rienke and was recently part of the HBX Flash Forward Fenix exhibition in dedication to the intended HBX art action in Kyiv in the nearest possible future.
