The Swedish pianist Martin Tingvall is regarded as one of the leading figures in European jazz, although his music effortlessly transcends any clearly defined genre. His distinctive Scandinavian style strikes a balance between jazz and contemporary neoclassicism, placing him in the same league as innovators such as Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds. Often described by critics as ‘the Edvard Grieg of jazz’, he appeals to a broad international audience with his melodious and cinematic depth.

On his solo album Perception of Time, he strips his piano playing back to its purest essence: intimate harmonies, moments of stillness and subtle emotions. Yet alongside its serene tranquillity, the album also reflects the fragility of our times, with poignant pieces such as ‘Orphans’. The result is a poetic and timely listening experience, full of comfort, contrast and reflection.
