Melancholy: longing for something you have never experienced. Once, doctors and thinkers considered this feeling one of the four temperaments through which they sought to understand the human state of mind. Unlike the other temperaments, melancholy could never be traced back to a physical cause. It remains elusive, and yet everyone has felt it at some point.

Programme

Music by Bach, von Bingen, Boulanger, Berio and more

In this concert, we navigate between the different temperaments - sanguine, phlegmatic and choleric - until everything comes together in melancholy. But do not be alarmed: melancholy is more than a dark note. It prompts the creation of something beautiful, born from the awareness of transience and unfulfilled longing. Melancholy is a muse: the embodiment of longing for longing itself.
