With this powerful programme, Nathalia Milstein and Maria Milstein take you on an emotional musical journey about oppression, memory and resilience, centred on the life of Valéry Arzoumanov.

Programme

Olivier Messiaen Thèmes et variations
Valéry Arzoumanov "Ich hab' im Traum geweinet", Romance for violin and piano op. 259
Valéry Arzoumanov "Voyage en Russie", triptych for violin and piano op. 202
Francis Poulenc Violin sonata
Valéry Arzoumanov Drie Nostalgische Valsen for violin and piano op. 15a
Sergei Prokofiev Sonata no.1 in f minor, op. 80

Born in 1944 in the Gulag as the son of victims of Stalin's terror, Arzoumanov grew up near the Arctic Circle. His music breathes longing, sharpness and inner strength. After his forced emigration to Paris, he studied with Messiaen and found a new artistic voice. In this concert, his works are framed by Messiaen's refined sound world, Poulenc's lyrical Violin Sonata and Prokofiev's moving First Sonata. In the inspired interpretation by the Milstein sisters, a compelling journey unfolds, full of intensity and emotional depth - an evening that moves and lingers in the memory.
