In Polderklanken, four composers from the Dutch musical landscape take centre stage: Rudolf Escher, Elmer Schönberger and Mathilde Wantenaar. Their music shows how diverse modern and contemporary idioms in the Netherlands have developed from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, each with a distinct personal signature.

Programme

Rudolf Escher Ciel, air et vents
Ton de Leeuw À cette heure de la nuit
Elmer Schönberger De opstijging
Mathilde Wantenaar La Noche Oscura del Alma
Georgi Sztojanov In lumine tuo (in memoriam Geert Berghs)

Escher, influenced by French Impressionism and the Second Viennese School, wrote refined, layered music in which structure and poetry come together. Schönberger combines playfulness, irony and intellectual sharpness, with a keen ear for text and context. Mathilde Wantenaar represents the youngest generation. Born in 1993 and working in the twenty-first century, she writes lyrical and enchanting music with a strong sense of vocal expression and drama. Her choral works combine emotional directness with an open, contemporary musical language.

Performed under the direction of chief conductor Daniel Reuss, Polderklanken reveals how richly and diversely the Dutch choral idiom has developed over time.
