In Silent Gestures, choreographer David Middendorp explores the language of the body - a language we all speak, often without realising it. When we speak enthusiastically, our words are accompanied by movement; our hands begin to speak, our bodies tell stories. Middendorp sees these natural gestures as a primal form of expression - and makes them visible in dance, technology and images

As always with Another Kind of Blue, technology plays an important role, but here it is more subtle - an extension of the body. Virtual hands move along via motion capture, while in the work Arms, drones together form an upper body that responds to improvising dancers. This creates a direct dialogue between man and machine, in which technology not only supports, but seems to empathise. And in Flyland (2016), dancers seem to fall through the air, caught and propelled by their own shadows. Light and projection become a dance partner that suspends the laws of gravity and blurs the boundaries of the body. Another new feature of Silent Gestures is the collaborations. Middendorp invites choreographer Daniel Barkan, among others, to create his own interpretation of the theme, in dialogue with the technologies developed in the Another Kind of Blue studio. The result is a programme in which different artists, styles and technical worlds come together, all speaking in one silent language: that of the body.
