The creators of Storm on contemporary dance, jazz, and improvisation

April 2026, video

What happens when contemporary dance and jazz completely let go of each other and yet amplify one another? In Storm, OFFprojects, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, and Shabaka Hutchings join forces in an energetic and unpredictable performance. In an video interview, choreographer Amos Ben-Tal and composer Shabaka Hutchings discuss what Storm means to them, how they approached improvisation, and what the audience can expect.

The creators draw inspiration from minimal music and rhythmic traditions from southern Uganda. These influences form the basis for a dynamic interplay between music and movement, with the unexpected at its core. With Storm, the creators return to the origins of jazz as dance music, but give it a contemporary twist. The result is a sensory experience in which chaos and harmony constantly alternate.

Additional activity – OFFsessions #11
Ahead of the premiere, OFFprojects present a special edition of OFFsessions: a public encounter centred around Storm. During this session, choreographer Amos Ben-Tal, the dancers and musicians of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (with Shabaka Hutchings) share insights into the creative process and offer a sneak preview of the new work. Free entry during Open Amare on 25 April.
