A Ticket to Aleppo presents a rare musical dialogue between Arab and Western traditions. Musicians from Aleppo - a city with a centuries-old, refined musical tradition - collaborate with the New European Ensemble to create a new sonic landscape in which ancient songs and new compositions go hand in hand.

Instruments such as oud, qanun and riq are combined with violin, viola, cello and flute. From the spontaneous improvisations of all the musicians, composer Kika Sprangers develops a new score: a hybrid language rooted in the melodic and poetic Syrian tradition, while at the same time embracing the freedom and experimentation of contemporary Western music. The result is neither folklore nor a classical concert, but an artistic borderland: music that sounds both familiar and estranging, where melodic refinement, microtonality and rhythmic cycles from Aleppo meet Western timbre, harmony and form.

This concert is part of Imaginary Cities, a series in which Orchestre Partout and leading Dutch ensembles annually develop new works at the intersection of Middle Eastern musical cultures and contemporary European practice.
