Alto saxophonist and composer Ben van Gelder is regarded both nationally and internationally as one of the great jazz talents of his generation. At a young age, he won awards such as the Princess Christina Competition, the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship, and the Deloitte Jazz Award. At the age of seventeen, he moved to New York, where he lived for nearly ten years and worked with top musicians such as Mark Turner, Joe Sanders, and Ambrose Akinmusire. There, he also developed his own style as a soloist and composer, partly inspired by his studies in art history.

With his quintet, he has released three critically acclaimed albums, including Among Verticals, which received rave reviews from de Volkskrant  and NRC. His most recent album, Manifold, recorded with an octet around a church organ, was hailed by *The New York Times* as a remarkable release.

The Whole Wide World Is Round
For the North Sea Jazz Festival, Van Gelder presents The Whole Wide World Is Round, a musical ode to fifty years of festival history and to the people who have shaped jazz. Memory is the central theme—a personal one for Van Gelder, who grew up above his father’s record store, Swingmaster, in Groningen, a fixture at the festival for many years. Abbey Lincoln, whose 1981 performance made a deep impression on his mother, is at the heart of this project. Her poetic lyrics about time, heritage, and identity inspire new compositions, combined with visuals by Tony Roe and archival footage of Van Gelder’s father.
