The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century returns with French Chaos to the French Baroque roots that made it world-famous over forty years ago under Frans Brüggen. Now, more than ten years after the founder's death, O18c pays tribute to French Baroque music centred on chaos and the four elements, under the musical direction of violinist Emmanuel Resche-Caserta.

Programme

Jean-Féry Rebel Les Éléments
Michel-Richard Delalande Suite from Les Éléments
Jean-Philippe Rameau Ouverture de Naïs
Nicolas Clérambault Le Soleil vainqueur des Nuages

The creation of the universe, and the transition from chaos to order, is vividly depicted - and at times in surprisingly modern sounds - in lesser-known gems of the French Baroque. Soprano Emmanuelle de Negri takes the solo in a cantata about the triumph of the sun over the clouds: light conquers darkness.

Bringing order out of chaos was a recurring theme in French rationalism during the Enlightenment, and in music it served as inspiration for a new way of composing. This collaboration with the Centre de Musique baroque de Versailles celebrates the innovative power of these lesser-known yet visionary French composers.
