Ghosts and Grounds explores themes from the past through the lens of the present. The title refers to the 'ghosts' of musical history and the 'grounds' - repeating bass lines - over which new variations are built.

Programme

Arcangelo Corelli Sonata 12 in d minor, "La Follia"
Jasper de Bock new composition
Helena Winkelman Ciaccona
Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber Passacaglia, "Guardian Angel" for violin solo
Johann Kasper Kerll Passacaglia for organ solo
with improvisations by Geerten van de Wetering and Joseph Puglia

Each work on the programme contains a series of variations on a pre-existing theme. The programme is centred on Corelli's most famous work, La Follia, which is itself a series of variations on an even older melody. Jasper de Bock, one of the Netherlands' most promising and gifted young composers, will write a new work inspired by musical 'ghosts'. Throughout the programme, Geerten van de Wetering and Joseph Puglia will improvise between the pieces, forging links between styles and presenting exciting new musical variations on centuries-old material.
