T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets profoundly influenced Gubaidulina to write a work rich in musical contrasts much like the language in the poems. Gubaidulina called the poems “an effortless bridge into music”.

Michael Hersch new work 
Sofia Gubaidulina Repentence

Repentence reveals the “soulfulness and freedom in the guitar which speaks to her musical language of expressive mood and often mysterious but precise sonorities”. Michael Hersch has written a brooding and expressive oboe concerto for NEuE’s oboist Christopher Bouwman which illustrates the continued influence of Gubaidulina’s work on today’s composers.
