Programme
On Saturday, May 30: festive opening and presentation of the artwork SWAY, including a short artist talk.
The artwork SWAY will then be on display for at least six weeks.
Even before you actually see SWAY (2026), you can already hear it. A mysterious, rhythmic sound catches your attention. The sound turns out to be produced by three sinks. They are placed on a platform and rotate very slowly. Inside the sinks are porcelain feet that move in sync with the kinetic artwork. This initiates an intriguing dance.
The artwork does not directly reference the dance forms often featured on stages at theaters like Amare, such as classical ballet or modern dance. The installation’s origins lie instead in dance scenes that take place on the fringes—places where people challenge one another late into the night to discover themselves and fight for their freedom. New social choreographies emerge in the shadows, in spaces temporarily free from social judgment. It is in nightclubs, at festivals, and at raves where the misfits and eccentrics reign supreme.
Artist Lukas Vonk (Geulle, Netherlands, 2001) completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague in June 2025. For his final exam project, “My Freak, Needs a Freak, To Look Down Upon,” the Heden Foundation in The Hague awarded him the Heden Start Prize in July 2025, an annual prize through which Heden supports young, talented artists.
