Matangi leads us through three string quartets balancing between the earthly and the celestial, between intimate emotion and transcendence.

Programme

Giacomo Puccini Crisantemi
Sergej Prokofjev String Quartet no. 2
Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet op. 132

Puccini's hushed Crisantemi, written as a farewell to a friend, distils his operatic expressiveness down to a core of pure simplicity and emotion. A gesture from earth to heaven. In Prokofiev's Second String Quartet, by contrast, the earthly takes centre stage. Inspired by the colourful folk music of the Kabardians, he evokes the raw, vital energy of everyday life. The dance rhythms and vivid melodies are firmly rooted in the ground, in the profane and the tangible. Yet in the slow middle movement, something else unfolds: a lyricism that transcends the everyday, as though heaven briefly makes itself heard on earth. In this way, Prokofiev shows that even in folk music, so deeply rooted in the earthly, moments of pure spirituality may be hidden. Beethoven's monumental Quartet Op. 132 perhaps transcends all boundaries. Above all, the Heiliger Dankgesang, born of illness and recovery, seems to come directly from heaven: music as prayer, as hymn of praise, as a connection between humanity and a higher reality.
