In this programme, Mozart's irresistible lightness and playfulness take centre stage, along with the surprising ways in which his music continues to inspire and resonate through the centuries.

Programme

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart The Hunt
Michael Nyman In Re Don Giovanni
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet in g minor

We open with Mozart's String Quartet No. 17 in B-flat major, KV 458, better known as The Hunt. The quartet owes its nickname to the galloping rhythm and hunting-horn motifs in the opening, which evoke a cheerful hunt in the Viennese countryside. It is one of the six quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn: a combination of elegant melodies, playful dialogue and subtle mastery. Mozart at his most charming.

The British composer Michael Nyman wrote his In Re Don Giovanni in 1984, a characteristically minimalist work built on a short passage from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. Through repetition, shifts and a hypnotic drive, Nyman shows how an eighteenth-century fragment could acquire a completely new, contemporary character in the twentieth century. A homage and a radical reinterpretation in one.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

After the intermission, we return to Mozart, this time in a larger-scale work: the String Quintet in G minor, KV 516. This masterpiece reveals Mozart’s deeper, more melancholic side. It is one of his most intense and dramatic chamber works, written during a period marked by personal and financial struggles. The addition of a second viola gives the quintet a warm, dark color and an almost symphonic depth. Despite its somber undertone, the lightness and beauty that make Mozart so unique ultimately shine through once again.
