Two Pioneers. One Revolution in Tango. Astor Piazzolla and Eduardo Rovira are considered the two great pioneers of avant-garde tango. Stories of rivalry and innovation surround them and raise the timeless question: who was the first to modernize tango? Although the answer remains elusive, their creative tension gave birth to something entirely new: contemporary tango.

For the first time, this concert brings together the music of their groundbreaking ensembles—Piazzolla’s Octeto Buenos Aires and Rovira’s Octeto La Plata. These daring groups pushed tango to its limits, reimagined its form, sound, and possibilities, and left behind works that forever changed the genre’s identity. 

SONICO, the Brussels-based ensemble dedicated to rediscovering Rovira’s genius, has breathed new life into forgotten and unpublished masterpieces through groundbreaking research and compelling performances. With four acclaimed albums and tours across Europe and Latin America, SONICO has redefined the boundaries of modern tango. As they celebrate Rovira’s 100th birthday in 2025, their mission is clear: his music is not just history—it is the future.
