The AIDS Quilt Songbook is a song cycle in which composers respond to the stigma, grief, and ignorance surrounding HIV and AIDS. Festival Klassiek achter de Duinen adds a new, contemporary chapter to this tradition: eauman by Rick van Veldhuizen.

Programme

Robert Ramsay Sleep, Fleshly Birth
Franz Schubert String Quartet No. 14, “Der Tod und das Mädchen”
Rick van Veldhuizen eauman*
Chris DeBlasio All the Way Through the Evening

*world premiere

Also on the programme is the moving All the Way Through the Evening by American composer Chris DeBlasio, originally written for baritone and piano. DeBlasio died at the age of 34, at the height of the AIDS crisis in 1993. And although Schubert lived long before the outbreak of AIDS, his music touches like no other on themes such as innocence and death. In the context of this evening, Der Tod und das Mädchen casts new light on mortality and loss.
