"From differences arises the most beautiful harmony" (Heraclitus). Artistic director Johanna Soller opens the season with a programme that embraces conflict, with works by J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, J.C. Bach and Arvo Pärt.

Programme

Johann Sebastian Bach Alles nur nach Gottes Willen, BWV 72
Johann Sebastian Bach Orkestsuite no. 4 in D major, BWV 1069
Johann Sebastian Bach Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg, BWV 149
Johann Christoph Bach Es erhub sich ein Streit
Dietrich Buxtehude Befiehl dem Engel, BuxWV10
Arvo Pärt Fratres

The ancient Greeks already knew it: opposites do not necessarily lead to conflict; they can also generate new energy. Music is the sounding example of this: harmony arises only when different, sometimes even opposing sounds come together. Johanna Soller places Baroque compositions by J.C. Bach and Buxtehude on the struggle between good and evil alongside Arvo Pärt's modern Fratres. This work is the ultimate example of the beauty of difference: the seemingly clashing C and C-sharp alternate in a harmonious union. Together with a cast of outstanding soloists - Carine Tinney, Alex Potter, Guy Cutting and Matthias Winckler - Johanna Soller celebrates the energy of opposites.
