Understanding is an evening about language that touches, derails and sometimes suddenly connects. Canadian-Dutch soprano Elisabeth Hetherington - winner of the Dutch Music Prize - co-created this programme with us. It is a search for what happens when words fall short, and for those rare moments when true connection still occurs.

Programme

Jacob de Senleches La Harpe de Melodie
Andrzej Krzanowski Relief IV for soprano and tubular bells
Cassandra Miller Thanksong
Rozalie Hirs New work*
Claude Vivier Bouchara
Antoine Gérin-Lajoie Un Canadien Errant
Joni Mitchell A Case of You

The tubular bells - sometimes whispering, sometimes insistent - run like a sonic thread through Understanding. Among other things, you will hear beautiful vocal solos by Hetherington and Claude Vivier's intense orchestral Bouchara. Also featured is a new composition by Rozalie Hirs, known for her musical language that is both mathematical and spiritual. In this work, voice and violin sound each other out: questions, misunderstandings, silence, and now and then a clear, shared moment. An intimate ode to the attempt to make real contact.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.
