Amare: a home for dance in all its forms

July 2026, article

From leading international companies and the Nederlands Dans Theater as its resident company to family shows, social dance and dance addressing pressing social issues: Amare is a home for dance in all its forms. With top-class international productions, Dutch premieres and plenty of opportunities to dance yourself, Amare occupies a unique position within the Dutch dance scene.

A platform for international dance
This season, Amare is once again welcoming several Dutch premieres of international productions. One of these is THIS IS RAMBERT: an anniversary production by the iconic British company Rambert. The show, created to mark the company’s centenary, brings together work by some of today’s most influential choreographers.

Amare is also bringing high-calibre international dance to The Hague for younger audiences. The Dutch premiere of The Cat Who Wanted to Change Her Tale (6+) by Thomas Noone Dance demonstrates how dance, imagination and storytelling come together effortlessly in a family show that appeals to young and old alike.
Another example is Chotto Desh (7+) by the Akram Khan Company. This moving dance-theatre production, based on the Olivier Award-winning show DESH, takes young audience members on a poetic journey between Britain and Bangladesh. With a unique blend of Kathak, contemporary dance, animation, music and spoken word, Chotto Desh tells a universal story about identity, heritage and feeling at home.

Through FIND, the International Dance Fund, Amare is working alongside its partners, the Holland Dance Festival and the Nederlands Dans Theater, to provide a platform for high-profile, international dance creators. The fund enables exceptional productions whilst also contributing to the ambition to further establish The Hague as the Netherlands’ leading city for dance. One of the productions resulting from this collaboration is Ihsane by choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, which received a four-star review in de Volkskrant.

Dance for everyone
The dance vision of Amare extends beyond presenting international top companies. The program offers space for established names and new creators, for productions that explore social themes, and for performances for children and families. This way, dance has a place for all generations and the art form is experienced from different perspectives. But at Amare, you don’t just experience dance from the stands. During Open Amare’s popular Social Dance evenings, enthusiasts of salsa, tango, bachata and lindy hop, amongst others, come together to take to the dance floor themselves. Beginners and experienced dancers come together at these inclusive evenings, where taking part is the main focus.

This broad approach will reach a new high point this season with the first edition of Everybody Dance Now, Amare’s new dance festival. This one-day festival will bring together international performances, workshops, social dancing and social gatherings. Visitors can not only watch the dance but also join in themselves. In this way, Amare brings together different dance styles, creators and audiences, demonstrating that dance connects, inspires and invites people to get moving themselves.

That this approach works was already evident from À Nos Combats. In June 2026, choreographer Salia Sanou presented this immersive international production at Amare, where boxing and dance meet in a physical and poetic way. The performance was well received by Theaterkrant. The Open Call, which allowed the audience to actively participate in the production, also proved to be a great success. À Nos Combats is thus a great example of how international collaboration, artistic development, and active audience involvement strengthen each other within Amare.
