The Desert Music van Steve Reich is een indrukwekkend koor- en orkestwerk dat poëtische taal verbindt met de dreiging en onzekerheid van zijn tijd. De titel en teksten zijn ontleend aan William Carlos Williams, wiens woorden Reich samenbracht tot één groot, ademend klanklandschap, gebaseerd op diens bundel The Desert Music and Other Poems.

Achter dat landschap gaat echter meer schuil: Reich koos bewust teksten uit Williams’ periode na Hiroshima en Nagasaki, een tijd waarin ‘de bom’ als een schaduw over de wereld hing. De muziek laat horen hoe menselijke dromen en verlangens botsen met de vragen die ons geweten oproept, een spanning die het hart van The Desert Music vormt. ‘De woestijn’ blijft daarbij dubbelzinnig — een echte plek, een innerlijke leegte, of een toekomstbeeld.
