Amare: a home for dance in all its forms
July 2026, article
From leading Dutch and international companies, including Nederlands Dans Theater as its resident company, to family performances, social dance, and dance addressing pressing social issues: Amare is a home for dance in all its forms. This gives Amare a unique position within the Dutch dance scene.
According to Geesje Prins, head of programming and dance programmer, that broad vision of dance is exactly what sets Amare apart. “Dance is everywhere,” she says. “You see it in music, movies, music videos, at festivals, right out on the street, and at Amare. And the best part? Dance is alive here every day. Every day I see duos and crews spontaneously dancing in front of the mirrors: tango, Chinese dance, or K-pop. At Amare, you don’t just watch dance—you join in. Because we’re all born to dance.”
Top-notch dance from the Netherlands and abroad
In addition to Nederlands Dans Theater as its resident company, Amare also presents performances by leading Dutch companies such as Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, ISH Dance Collective, and The Ruggeds. Together, they showcase just how versatile and innovative Dutch dance is. For example, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam’s La Mer brings together dance, music, couture, and video art in a multimedia performance about the beauty and fragility of the oceans.
That versatility is also reflected in the international programming. This season, Amare once again welcomes several Dutch premieres of international productions. One of them is THIS IS RAMBERT: an anniversary production by the iconic British company Rambert. The performance, created to mark the company’s centennial, offers a powerful evening full of swing, club energy, and contemporary dance. Another international highlight is Ihsane by choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, performed by the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. The production, awarded four stars by De Volkskrant, is a poetic and personal quest for identity, love, and connection. Amare presents Ihsane in collaboration with the Holland Dance Festival, with support from the International Dance Fund (FIND).
International dance is for all ages, as Amare also brings high-quality productions to The Hague for young audiences. The Dutch premiere of The Cat Who Wanted to Change Her Tale (6+) by Thomas Noone Dance demonstrates how dance, imagination, and storytelling effortlessly come together in a family-friendly performance that appeals to young and old alike. Another example is Chotto Desh (7+) by the Akram Khan Company, which has been touring internationally since 2025 and continues to move audiences worldwide. This dance-theater production, based on the Olivier Award-winning show DESH, takes young visitors on a poetic journey between Great Britain and Bangladesh. With a unique blend of Kathak, contemporary dance, animation, music, and spoken word, Chotto Desh tells a universal story about identity, heritage, and belonging.
Dance for everyone
Amare’s vision for dance extends beyond simply presenting top-tier companies from the Netherlands and abroad. Because at Amare, you don’t just experience dance from the stands. During Open Amare’s popular Social Dance evenings, enthusiasts of salsa, tango, bachata, house, lindy hop, and more come together to hit the dance floor themselves. Beginners and experienced dancers mingle during these inclusive evenings where participation is key.
This broad approach reaches a new high point this season with the first edition of Everybody Dance Now, Amare’s new dance festival. This festival day brings together national and international performances, workshops, social dance, and social gatherings. Visitors can not only watch dance but also join in with exciting musical acts. In this way, Amare brings together different dance styles, creators, and audiences, demonstrating that dance connects, inspires, and invites people to get moving themselves.
That this approach works was already demonstrated by À Nos Combats. In June 2026, choreographer Salia Sanou presented this compelling international production at Amare, in which boxing and dance intersect in a physical and poetic way. The performance was praised by Theaterkrant. The Open Call, which allowed the audience to actively participate in the production, also proved to be a great success. À Nos Combats is thus a fine example of how international collaboration, artistic development, and active audience engagement
